Why do I need to fumigate my glass bottle?

Glass bottles should be sterilized, but you may not know why. It ensures your products are clean enough to keep food fresh for as long as possible after sterilization. Bacteria can easily get into the nooks and crannies of glassware if not sterilized first.

How does the sterilization/fumigation process work?

Sterilizing glass bottles involves heating or washing dishes.

Your glass bottle becomes sterile when heated to a specific temperature. If you choose this method, you will need oven mitts and a heat-resistant container. Also, you need to make sure your bottle can withstand the heat without cracking or shattering.

Bottles can also be sterilized in a dishwasher with a high-temperature setting. Set the rinse cycle to run, then use the bottle when it's done. On the other hand, not everyone has access to a dishwasher, and a single rinse cycle consumes a lot of water, making it a less environmentally friendly sanitizing option.

How to sterilize/fumigate glass bottles?

Tip: Before you start, your bottle should be able to withstand 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Be sure to clean the bottle with soap and water before starting any of these procedures.

When using the oven

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Set up a parchment-lined baking sheet and place the bottle on the baking sheet.

Fifteen minutes in the oven is enough.

Fill as soon as possible after removing it from the oven.

In the dishwasher

Put the bottles in the dishwasher individually (no used dishes please).

Set the dishwasher to run a hot rinse cycle before starting.

Wait for the loop to complete before making any decisions.

Bottles should be taken out of the dishwasher and filled immediately.

Glass jars, caps, and lids can also be sterilized using any of these methods. Unless you're sure they're oven safe, it's best not to put plastic lids in the oven. As an alternative, you can boil the lids in water for 15 minutes.

Sterilized bottles should be filled and sealed as soon as possible to prevent bacteria from re-entering the bottles after the sterilization process is complete. To be sure, safety always comes first. Keep children and pets out of the kitchen until your bottle is properly sealed.
